Club des Cinglés du Mont-Ventoux

The Club des Cingles du Mont-Ventoux or Club of the Mad Men of Mont-Ventoux, is world renowned, with membership earned by riders tackling 138kms and 4400m of climbing, via the three paved ascents of Mont-Ventoux, in just one day of riding. Le Domestique Tours love this challenge so much, that the King of the Mountains Tour de France is built around it, however we recognise that many riders may not have the time to tackle a full week’s grand tour. To address this need we are offering our Club des Cingles du Mont-Ventoux weekend, a three night scheduled package designed to provide riders with everything they need to tackle this incredible cycling challenge. Taking place on selected dates in 2018, this is the perfect option for those looking to conquer Mont-Ventoux.

With the three ascents of Ventoux providing one of the toughest challenges in the cycling world, the support and overall experience you receive takes on an even greater importance. Based in the beautiful Provence countryside just outside the famous town of Bédoin, our hotel provides riders with superb accommodation and facilities, yet crucially places us just minutes from the base of Mont-Ventoux on the preferred first ascent from Bédoin. Coupled with our unrivalled knowledge of the Club des Cinglés du Mont-Ventoux, our first class supported riding service and our small group sizes, riders can be sure that they will receive the highest quality experience possible. Full itinerary details can be found in the Itinerary section below, along with a list of FAQs to provide you with everything you need to know ahead of your Club des Cingles du Mont-Ventoux entry.

Day 1 - Collection from Marseille

Arriving into Marseille Provence on the late morning flights (see FAQ for flight details), you'll be met by the LDT team and transfer to our base for the weekend at the Hotel La Guintrand in Bedoin at the base of Ventoux. In the afternoon we'll run a short familiarisation ride including the beautiful Madeleine Mont-Ventoux before a full Club des Cinglés du Mont-Ventoux briefing.

Day 2 - Club des Cinglés du Mont-Ventoux

Rising early to beat the midday sun, we'll fuel up with a full breakfast then begin our Cinglés attempt, tackling the Bédoin, Malaucéne and Sault ascent and descents, via the incredible Tommy Simpson memorial, spine tingling moonscape and iconic summit of Mont-Ventoux. On completion riders return to our hotel to relax in the hotel bar, before a celebratory dinner.

Day 3 - Cinglés du Mont-Ventoux Alternate

A mountain like Mont Ventoux has its weather based reputation for a reason, so we build in two days to allow the best one to be utilised for the Cinglés attempt. On the non-Cinglés day we complete another days ride, with the option for a full day in the saddle riding the stunning Gorges de la Nesque, or a reduced distance day for those preparing for/recovering from the Cinglés.

Day 3 - Return to Marseille

After a final breakfast riders are free to enjoy a final morning ride, before lunch and our return to Marseille Provence for the late afternoon flights home, returning as newly minted members of the Club des Cinglés du Mont-Ventoux.

    Club des Cinglés du Mont-Ventoux
    • Founded 27 years ago, the Club des Cinglés du Mont-Ventoux is open to all riders, with membership requiring said riders to have completed the three paved ascents of Mont-Ventoux in one day of riding, obtaining four stamps, one from each of the ascent starting towns (Bedoin, Malaucéne and Sault) and one from the summit, along with time stamps to record the timing of their progress.
    • Full details of this incredible challenge can be found at the official website here
  • The Three Ascents
    • Joining the Club des Cinglés du Mont-Ventoux is one of the finest achievements in amateur cycling!
    • Bedoin – 1912m, 21.5km and 7.5% – the traditional Tour de France ascent, which begins in the brutally steep forested lower slopes, before opening out into the infamous moonscape at Chalet Reynard.
    • Malaucéne – 1912m, 21km and 7.5% – some feel this is even tougher than Bedoin, with a consistent steep gradient and the backside of Ventoux providing little respite from the strong midday sun on fine weather days.
    • Sault – 1912m, 26km and 4.7% – the easiest and perhaps most enjoyable descent hides a sting in the tail, with the final seven kilometres from Chalet Reynard on being shared with the Bedoin ascent. Underestimate this final ascent at your peril.
    • Tackling the ascents in order of difficulty – only Le Domestique Tours riders benefit from our flawless support service and unrivalled knowledge of how to succeed at the Cinglés.
    Fitness and Gearing
    • While some riders do tackle the Club des Cinglés du Mont-Ventoux challenge on a standard double chainset (53/39), we generally recommend that riders opt for a compact chainset (50/34), accompanied by a 27T or 28T rear cassette. This gives a good spread of gears to cover most eventualities and ensures that you have a low enough gear to keep the pedals turning. Some riders do utilise triple chainsets, however in many circumstances this does not provide a lower gear than the ratios suggested above.
    • The Club des Cinglés du Mont-Ventoux challenge is a very challenging undertaking, with riders either descending or climbing throughout the day.
    • If you are in any doubt about your ability to complete the challenge or wish to chat with us about the coaching options that Le Domestique Training can provide, please contact robert@
    What is Supported Riding?
    • One of the main benefits of choosing Le Domestique Tours, is our pro-level supported riding service, which is an integral part of all of our packages, ensuring that you are never far from a support van, which carry your spare clothing, water and nutrition supplies, along with providing mechanical support.
    • Riders are free to ride at their own speed throughout the Cinglés, with the support van roaming the course throughout the day and the summit support station being staffed throughout the day, ensuring that you are never far from assistance.
    • On completion, our superbly located hotel enables quicker riders to return to the hotel and relax poolside or with a massage, while the steadier riders complete the challenge.
    • The mountains can be extremely fickle and it is therefore difficult to predict the weather on any tour. Please therefore ensure you have a mix of kit to cover hot through to cold, along with wet weather. A definite must for packing is obviously a wind/waterproof gilet or jacket and full finger gloves, which are a good idea for the descents and mornings. Arm and knee warmers are also great as they are easy to adjust on the fly and help us keep things moving on the road. We also recommend that you bring your full wet weather kit in case we encounter any particularly poor weather.
    • We have a tool kit with us which contains the usual allen keys, pedal spanners, chain whips, cassette tools, chain splitter, track pump etc etc which guests are welcome to use throughout the tour. If you have any unusual bits on your bike such as proprietary bottom brackets or older/Campag group sets then you may want to bring your own specific tools as we can’t guarantee that we will have the correct tool in case of disaster. Due to their fragility we are unable to provide a torque wrench and therefore recommend that you bring your own if you require one for assembling your bike.
    • We recommend that you carry at least one spare inner tube along with a mini pump/co2 and a multitool with you at all times as a minimum so that if you do suffer a mechanical we can quickly take care of it. We have supplies of threaded Co2 canisters which you are welcome to borrow for the duration of the tour and either return unused, or if you do have to use them we charge £2 per canister.
    • The weather on Ventoux can be very fickle, with low cloud and fog regularly encountered,?so please ensure that you have both front and rear lights with you (simple LED commuting lights are sufficient). Failure to carry lights can result in a fine from the police and also risks drivers not seeing you, so please do not forget to bring/use them.
